When nature calls, it can be hard to ignore. But if you’re in Bali, think twice before ducking behind a tree or a temple wall to answer that call. What many visitors don’t realize is that most places in Bali, even a seemingly ordinary tree, can be considered sacred.

On the brighter side, unlike some of the western countries, minimarkets with clean and FREE restrooms are at every corner with such facilities literally on the outside of every street. There is no need to relieve oneself in such a public and extreme manner."

What Happens If You’re Caught Relieving Yourself in Public?

Fines & Legal Issues

If you thought people were joking when they said that Bali is infamously known for having temples and crowded areas, then you need to know, those people were not joking. It is well known that the Balinese have their own local community organizations like the banjar (village council) and pecalang (traditional security forces) that play a significant role in enforcing local norms. You could also face fines ranging from IDR 100,000 to IDR 1,000,000, depending on the location and circumstances.

Risk of Deportation

If you are a foreign national and you have a long-term visa for Bali, then repeated offenses or other public misconduct could endanger your stay on Bali. Staying in Bali might come with a lot of perks, but not respecting the local community and getting involved in illegal activities could result in consequences.

Where to Go Instead?

Unlike some Western countries, Bali makes it easy to find a restroom – a feat that many other countries can only dream of. Here are several places where you should not run into any problems:

  • Minimarket: These are some of the most common convenience stores in Bali and boast restrooms free to everyone.

  • Gas Stations: These popular places have clean restrooms that are accessible to all.

  • Malls & Supermarkets: Malls are well known for their shopping, but restrooms are also very clean and easy to find.

  • Cafés & Restaurants: If you’re a customer (even just buying a coffee), most places will happily let you use their restroom.

Restroom Tips for Foreigners

  • Carry Tissues or Wet Wipes: Not all restrooms provide toilet paper, so it’s always good to have your own.

  • Be Prepared for Cultural Differences: Some local restrooms use a water scoop (called a gayung) instead of toilet paper. It might take some getting used to, but it’s all part of the experience!

Why Does This Matter?

Beyond the legal and social consequences, public urination can have a real impact on Bali’s environment and communities. It can pollute waterways, harm ecosystems, and create unsanitary conditions for everyone. By using proper facilities, you’re not just following the rules—you’re helping to keep Bali clean and beautiful for locals and visitors alike.
